Product Review – Yes Organic Personal Lubricant

We spend so much time worried about the things that go into our bodies. We look for GMOs, pesticides and high fructose corn syrup. We make sure our produce is organic, our animal products hormone-free and our home cleaning products as chemical-free as possible. But what about…down there? When we use items like condoms and personal lubricant, we don’t tend to consider what’s in it – after all, did anyone ever tell us to scan the ingredient labels on our sex play products?

But it is important, after all – condoms can cause allergic reactions for people who have latex or dairy allergies (did you know there’s casein in condoms?) and many women have negative reactions after using the lubes they’ve tried. This can lead to us giving up on these items entirely – which can result in more risky sex (increased risk of disease, infections and unplanned pregnancies). When it comes to lube, it’s something many women really benefit from. Depending on where we are in our cycles and our age, things can get a little dry down south. And hey, life happens – it’s not so easy to get aroused when you’re exhausted from taking care of a sick kid or a hard work week. Lube can increase our pleasure and sensitivity, make intercourse more playful and satisfying and generally makes ALL kinds of sex feel better (even oral!).

So, back to our ponderings over organics – can we have organic lube? Yes we can! And yes we should! Our bodies absorb the things we put into and onto it – so should we continue using stuff with lots of chemicals, stuff that can cause yeast infections and irritation because of its ingredients? No! And this is where Yes Organic Personal Lubricant comes into save the day – and your sex life!

IMG_1928Yes is a UK-based company and their product line is entirely plant-based. That’s right – completely. It’s gluten-free, vegan, sugar-free – you name it! Their products are never tested on animals. Their ingredients are food-quality (yep, you can eat them!). My favorite part? Their largest ingredient is aloe – a plant known for its skin-healing properties. That means their lube can actually soothe and heal. Why is this important?

“Mucous membranes are the moist layer of semi-permeable tissue lining the mouth, nose, eyes, vagina and anus. Because they do not have the protective layer found on the surface of the outer skin, mucous membranes can be damaged, irritated and penetrated by synthetic chemicals much more easily. Rectal and vaginal absorption is, generally speaking, many times greater than oral absorption.” – The Ecologist

Now this is where I come in. Because I was so impressed with the products and purity of Yes lubricant, I wanted to try it and see if I could recommend it to you, dear readers. The lovely people at Yes agreed to send me some samples in exchange for an honest review. Note: I would never recommend something I didn’t truly believe would benefit my readers and clients.

I received the starter package, containing several different forms of the two main lubes Yes sells: oil-based and water-based. Each lube was presented in a sample packet, an internal applicator and a small, stylish bottle. Well, of course, I got to work reviewing these as soon as I could, and here’s what I found:

Oil-based

Most lubes I’ve tried are not oil-based, so I didn’t know what to expect. A couple things should be immediately noted here: oil-based lubes are not condom-friendly and use of them with condoms can result in damage to the condom (ditto for diaphragms and rubber-based sex toys). Keep a towel nearby while using unless your partner’s okay with slippery hands all over them. Though you may note, the oil it’s made of is great for your skin, so you may just want to rub it in!

I was immediately surprised at how thick and smooth this lube was – unlike most lubes I’ve tried, this one wasn’t liquidy and runny. I actually compared it to shortening. It went on smoothly, and WOW! It does. Not. Stop. Ladies, any of you who need a really slick lube (especially those of you facing menopause), buy this stuff NOW. I’ve never felt anything so smooth before. I was amazed. A little goes a long way, so this stuff will really last you. And you people out there who love marathon sex – get thee some of this right away.

Ingredients: Yes® Oil based lubricant contains two rich organic butters – cocoa butter and shea butter, which impart smoothness and body; two fine emollient oils – sweet almond oil and sunflower oil, both organic, which confer a silky texture and skin moisturising benefits; and lastly a little white organic bees wax, and some Vitamin E which as well as benefiting the skin, acts as a preservative.

Water-based

This lube was a lot more like what I was used to. Less liquidy and more gel-like, it goes on silky smooth. I loved that as it dried on my hands, it left absolutely no stickiness or residue behind at all. (And as someone who gets really anxious about stuff on my hands, I truly couldn’t tell I’d even touched it – and anyone who’s tried most lubes can attest to the grimy, sticky mess you wind up with.) It doesn’t last as long as the oil-based, but it is condom-friendly, hypoallergenic (like the rest of their products) and can be used with your toys. Like the oil-based, you don’t need much initially, but keep some on hand to reapply if you find yourself drying out.

I was really struck by how natural this one felt – though most lubes boast a “just like me” product, I’ve never felt a lube that truly was so close to the body’s natural lubricant. This is great for those of you who just need a little extra fluid during your playtime – and want it to feel real. So many of you know what it’s like to use a lube that gives you irritation or an infection – but fear not, because this lube will only give you pleasure!

Ingredients: Yes® water based lubricant is made from organic Aloe Vera, a renowned skin food; from organic Flax extract which is particularly beneficial for the mucous membranes and from three synergistic plant based gums – guar, locust bean and xanthan, all of which contribute to the deep velvety texture. Food grade preservatives are included, and citric acid to buffer the pH.

I loved experimenting with Yes lubricant – I was blown away by the quality of their ingredients, the diversity of the products and how effective they both were. I highly recommend you give them a try. As a matter of fact, Yes was generous enough to give me 10 sample packages to give away to you, my lovely readers!
